John gets this for Easter. Dave can’t sleep if it’s in the same room. Lil Cal V2.0.
(Bad and I don’t care. No fucks are given, people.)
John really loves Dave’s photography. Every time he actually tells him, Dave just revs up one of those long winded “for the irony” speeches, so John decides to actually show him just how much he loves it rather than tell.
One year for his birthday, John goes into Dave’s room and finds his “portfolio” (really just a yellow envelope) where he keeps all of the pictures he’s proud of. That night when Dave gets home from work, he notices it missing and tries not to freak, asking John where it is. John only smiles innocently and hands Dave a wrapped package.
It’s a small thing, about the size of a dictionary and wrapped in Disney princess wrapping paper. (“You might say it’s ironic?” says John.) Dave smiles and unwraps the gift to find a leather photo album. He grins and thanks John, kissing his forehead.
John laughs and says that’s only half the present. “Look inside.” he commands.
Dave skeptically flips through the pages and freezes on the first page. He was expecting some old family photos or something… but instead, he finds his work. All of them have been placed into the holders carefully. John even went through and marked the dates on the pages, writing every single one underneath it in black ink.
Dave is absolutely speechless. He only looks at John, pushing his shades up to rest on the top of his head.
And John knows he’s done well, because if Dave takes his shades off willingly like this, it must be a big deal. John smiles. “I figured you could use this instead of that old envelope,” he says, “It’d protect the pictures better.”
Dave nods once and yanks John into a tight hug, kissing the top of his head over and over again. “Thank you.” He murmurs. “John. This is the best. You’re the best.”
John giggles and pecks Dave once on the lips. “Happy Birthday.”
Dave may seem like the “cool guy” without emotion, but truth be told he has a lot on his mind at all times.
For instance; Bro was always the awesome one between them. Dave really looked up to him and sill does, but he often compares himself to others that he deems more awesome than himself. That makes him insecure about a lot of things, especially his relationship status with John. He’s always afraid that John will just up and leave him one day. That he’ll find someone more deserving of his love.
John takes notice of this after they were out at a movie. (John had chosen a romantic drama about break ups. Oh, the irony.) Dave gets all quiet and as they are driving back home, John notices that Dave’s leg is twitching which is odd. Sure, he fidgets, but it’s mostly just drumming out complex rhythms on the steering wheel with his fingers. This “leg bounce” thing is new, (it’s been happening more as of late) and John asks Dave to pull over.
Dave is hesitant but he complies, parking along a side street. Without shifting his gaze from looking forward, Dave asks John what’s up.
”What’s got you so anxious lately, Dave?”
Dave shifts uncomfortably and looks out the driver side window and answers “Nothing.”
”Bullshit.” John huffs, leaning over and forcing Dave to face him. “Fess up, Dave. I can read you like a book you know?”
And Dave tenses up and shifts his gaze away from John when he answers him. He tells John how scared he actually is. And normally, he’d try to hide it but Jesus it’s hard sometimes. Because John is just so… perfect. And Dave is so flawed. And-
John cuts him off mid sentence by hugging him close and shooshing him gently. Dave hugs back after what seems like forever. John pulls back and gives him one of those absolutely beautiful lopsided grins and tells Dave he’s being really dumb.
”You’re so hard on yourself, Dave. You have no reason to be! I think you’re pretty damn awesome.”
Dave is speechless and his eyes widen the slightest bit because wow John really means it.
”I mean, sure you have your flaws and I have mine.” John continues, “But I love you anyway. Flaws and all. I love every part of you… except when you forget to rinse your cereal bowls and the frosted flakes stick to the rim. That shit turns harder than concrete, Dave!”
Dave smiles and just gathers John up in his arms and whispers a relieved “I love you,” under his breath. John smiles against Dave’s shoulder and says it right back. And adds one more word.
”Forever.”
(I’m back, guys. For better or for worse.)
TG: my text is red
TG: your text is blue
TG: i really hate puppets
TG: but i really love you
EB: dave… that was so lame.
EB: but also really adorable.
EB: i love you, too.
Because of years and years of training, Dave has wracked up a ton of scars. All over the place, too; all along his arms, his legs, his back is just full of them, his shoulders and chest… Just everywhere. And it makes him feel sort of insecure. Unless he’s asleep with the door locked or in the shower, he’s never without a long sleeved shirt and jeans.
John notices this and he knows how much Dave wishes he wasn’t all carved up like that, but John sees nothing wrong with him. So one day when they’re just sort of relaxing on the couch, John brings it up. When he asks Dave to let him see, Dave is super insecure and even though he has his shades on John can tell his eyes go wide.
”No way.” he snaps. “Absolutely not, John.”
”But Dave!” John would say back, “I’m not going to touch them or anything! I just want to see. Please?”
And then John does something that’s totally unfair; he gives Dave the puppy-dog eyes and just sort of looks at him. And it takes all of Dave’s willpower to tell him “no”.
John sighs, defeated, and then gets a bright idea. Without saying anything at all, he lifts his shirt over his head and tosses it to the side. He hears Dave catch his breath.
And Dave has sort of adopted this horrified look because holy shit he’d almost forgotten Jack had stabbed John those two times. There’s a huge, diamond-shaped scar in the center of his chest, stark white against creamy colored skin (John is pale, but Dave is practically printer paper white).
John smiles a bit and leans back against the couch cushions and says “Alright, now let me see yours.”
Dave grimaces and tugs his long sleeved shirt over his head and tosses it with Johns but immediately crosses his arms. “There.” He grumbles, “Satisfied?”
Then John goes silent because wow that’s a lot of scars. There’s big ones, little ones, jagged and clean-cut ones. John brings one hand up slowly and traces his finger over a long, jagged line that goes from Dave’s shoulder to his bottom rib. “Wow…” he says.
Dave turns his gaze away like he’s ashamed. “Yeah, I know. I look awful. Thanks for telling me. Because, you know, I didn’t already know that.”
Panicking, John shakes his head. “Oh, no! That’s not at all what I meant!” he takes Dave’s hand and holds it tight between both of his. “I’m just… amazed at how many there actually are! They’re so cool looking!”
And Dave is taken aback. Like… Wow, John really means it. “You don’t think they look scary?”
God, this friggin’ kid… He grins like a doofus and shakes his head. “Nope! Well, it’s kinda scary because I’m sure they hurt. But I think they kind of suit you. All the best action heroes have cool scars. It’s only fitting that you have your fair share, too!”
Dave goes quiet because wow, he really doesn’t mind his scars? He thinks they’re… Cool? And that he’s cool for having them? That’s actually really awesome and it fills Dave’s heart with pride that John thinks of him as a hero.
The coolkid leans forward and takes John’s face between his hands and gives him a kiss that leaves him reeling. When they pull apart, John is blushing like a madman. Dave chuckles a bit before tugging him into a hug.
”Thanks, John.” he says. His voice is no louder than a whisper.
And John smiles and hugs him back, telling him it’s no trouble at all.
They spend the rest of the afternoon with John tracing some of Dave’s scars and asking him how he got them.
Dave has no issues with his sexuality, and in fact, he doesn’t mind flaunting it at all. John, however, does have some issues with it because he was whole-hog on the whole “no homo” thing for a long time. So when Dave wants to hold hands in public, or sneak a quick kiss when they’re driving and stop at an intersection, John is somewhat hesitant. It’s not because he doesn’t love Dave, but he’s just a bit insecure.
But when they get back to their apartment (they had finally saved up enough with their respective jobs) John would be all over Dave. He’d want to be as close to him as possible whenever possible. Dave isn’t complaining at all because John is really a sweet kid even if he likes bad movies and his pranks are constant, and the fact that he’s so willing to be with Dave at all is kind of the most amazing thing.
But John still feels kind of shitty that he doesn’t like to be affectionate in public but Dave reassures him for the hundredth time that he isn’t planning on bailing anytime soon. Or ever.
And John just smiles that big, goofy grin and kisses Dave’s cheek.
”Wow,” Dave would tease, “That’s pretty homo, John.”
John smiles. “I am all of the homo. It is me.”
This one is a bit short but I promised a headcanon for today so here it goes.
Dave is about 6’5 and John is about 6’1. Dave is also more muscular from years of training with Bro, but not ripped like his brother. John isn’t without muscle but it doesn’t really show, either and Dave finds it pretty cute. So when they cuddle, John is almost always the little spoon.
Dave sometimes buys John hoodies that are about four sizes too big because they sort of engulf him in soft cotton and his hands barely make it out of the ends of the sleeves. F-ing adorable if you ask Dave. And when Dave tells John that it makes him cute, John gets all huffy and Dave can see a little bit of blush creep across his cheeks.
Sometimes Dave can’t even take it anymore and he hugs John, picking him up at the same time. John is just all offended, like “Dave! What the hell? Put me down!”
And Dave smirks like the smug prick he is sometimes and is just all “No can do, John.”
And he drags John to the couch where they snuggle up and watch Myth Busters.
